Roughly 50 vehicles have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.

Automobiles, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a official communication.

Officers report they were contacted late on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.

The substance had been applied in the pattern of a swastika, they added.

Police then located many other vandalized cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.

These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.

Law enforcement state preliminary tests show the liquid was most likely human blood.

"At present there remains no lead as to where it came from; officials are presently not aware of any injuries in relation with the incident," they added.

City officials said they were trying "to unravel the incident" and have asked to the public for tips.

A senior official stated the vandalism left him without words and needed to be resolved promptly.

"This act affects the core of Hanau and reopens the pain of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he stated on a platform, recalling the death of nine victims by a shooter targeting residents of immigrant origin in February 2020.
