A defense minister has stated that the MoD is actively looking into the potential threats associated with Chinese vehicles, while staff have been instructed to avoid discussing classified information in all vehicles.
Safety Guidance for Defence Personnel
During a recent appearance on LBC, a defence minister addressed reports that MoD officials have been told not to talk about secret material while riding in Chinese vehicles.
He said that the ministry is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but emphasised that safety is a concern in every contemporary cars.
Our department has a collection of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug MoD technology into their car, to avoid having discussions at a secret level in any kind of car, because of the growing risks of eavesdropping that exist in all automobile, to only have those confidential talks in protected areas. This is a wise and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about safety.
After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using every cars from China, Pollard responded: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Broader Security Context
The revelation comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off public transport and cause chaos to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel was reportedly directing lasers at RAF pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.
This wider security situation highlights the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in all aspects of official operations, from transport use to discussions habits.
