In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the New Political Partnership
According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Political Discussions Taking Place
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of leading political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
