Fresh analysis suggests that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People using such drugs must be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to starting weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting generally see a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
Users who have come off the medication report a powerful return of cravings.
"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
